PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROVIDERS - PERTH W.A.
This is a list of some local professional development providers. This is not an endorsement, unless otherwise stated, (gold stars indicate a high endorsement from me personally!). I recommend that you thoroughly research the company and presenters before undertaking any professional development. Some providers are better than others. You must always make your own (informed) choice about which professional development is best for you as an individual and that which is best for your school and staff context.
Shoebox grammar
As quoted on their Facebook page: "Shoebox Grammar. Ridiculously simple. Concrete. Constructivist. Taught with guided discovery. Cheap to set up in your class. Includes everything from basic word functions to writing fantastic stories. Grammar. Most people cringe or yawn, teachers AND students.
Shoebox Grammar, a revolutionary new method, makes it exciting, simple and relevant. If you are a primary or secondary teacher in an English-teaching classroom, check out Professional Development Days or pre-order the book" I recommend you do the workshop before ordering the book. Greg Byrne is a highly motivated presenter, it's clear he loves what he does. There will be no 'death-by-powerpoint' in his presentations. If you have a school focus on Grammar or Writing, this would be the PD for you. Contact via: [email protected] www.shoeboxgrammar.com.au Download the Shoebox Grammar flyer here TTA Online

Peter Nowlands is a very knowledgeable practitioner when it comes to Mathematics. He has developed MTS Online, a Mathematics programming, planning and assessment resource (with worksheets and interactives for the IWB!) that can be accessed via an individual or whole school subscription. Regardless of this, his workshops about Numeracy development are outstanding! He even works in some handy tips for 'boys in Education'

I can't recommend Diana Rigg's workshops enough. A Teacher who later became a trained speech pathologist, Diana Rigg is able to establish a no nonsense whole school approach to teaching reading, spelling, phonics and all other things literacy!
Check out her very informative website here: Explicit Instruction
There are several agencies that provide professional development in this area. I would first contact your system authority (e.g. Education Department) to see what they can recommend. Alternatively, here are some providers you may want to look into....
ICT Provide 'Explicit Instruction' Seminars. I noticed on their list, Western Australia was not listed! They do provide PD in W.A. here is an old flyer. Talk to them via email to see what's on offer in your area. In Perth, W.A. there are a set of schools that refer to themselves as the "Coalition of Schools". These schools fully implement the Explicit Instruction philosophy based heavily on the 'John Fleming' model. They run seminars and also run professional learning events, where by teachers can attend for a whole day and see this in action. For more information about this email Jane Schorer [ [email protected] ]. Here is an old flyer from one of their paste events. |
